The City of Kettering, Ohio, Law Department seeks an Ohio licensed attorney to serve as a full-time Assistant Law Director. The Assistant Law Director is responsible for assisting the Law Director in providing professional legal services for the City in a fast-paced environment. The Assistant Law Director negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts; conducts legal research and prepares memoranda and advisory opinions, or provides informal advice, based on research findings; drafts resolutions and ordinances; and represents the City in court and before administrative bodies. Work is performed utilizing independent judgment and initiative. Position has extensive public contact and requires regular and predictable on-site attendance. Evening meeting attendance is required.  The Assistant Law Director works under the guidance of the Law Director and acts for the Law Director in the Law Director’s absence.  No outside practice of law is permitted.

Candidates must have graduated from an accredited school of law and hold an active license to practice law in the State of Ohio with no prior discipline. The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge of municipal law, ordinances and charter provisions, particularly relating to authority and functions of municipal departments, agencies and boards; knowledge of judicial procedures, rules of evidence, and methods of legal research and writing; knowledge of zoning and planning laws and related procedures; knowledge of principles and methods of administration, organization, and supervision; the ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents concerned in difficult and complex matters; the ability to present material in a clear and logical form for oral and written presentations, briefs, opinions, orders, or decisions; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, municipal officials, representatives of various interests, and the public; good time management skills and the ability to complete work on time. Previous municipal law experience is preferred.  Prior real estate law or transactional law experience is a plus.

Salary range for this position is negotiable up to $151,133/year, contingent upon the candidate’s related experience, skills, education, knowledge and abilities.
