Description

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act changed more than the legal requirements surrounding pregnancy-related workplace accommodations—it changed how employers must approach the conversation, evaluate employee needs, and make decisions about leave and workplace support.

In this practical 90-minute session, Rachel Shaw will help participants move beyond simply knowing what the PWFA requires and focus on what to do when an employee requests—or appears to need—a pregnancy-related workplace accommodation. Rachel will address the practical questions public-sector HR and labor relations professionals are navigating, including when documentation may be requested, how to evaluate leave and workplace accommodations, how the PWFA interacts with existing disability and leave practices, and how to avoid unnecessarily rigid processes that create risk.

The session will conclude with an extended ADA Decision Lab–style Live Coaching and Q&A segment. Participants may bring their real-world questions and challenging scenarios for practical discussion, analysis, and coaching with Rachel.

About Rachel Shaw

Rachel Shaw is a nationally recognized expert, author, and educator in disability, leave, and workplace accommodation compliance. She is President and Principal Consultant of Rachel Shaw, Inc., where she helps employers build the systems, skills, and professional judgment necessary to manage some of the workplace’s most difficult employee relations decisions.

Rachel is the author of The Disabled Workforce: What the ADA Never Anticipated and the creator of the trademarked Disability Interactive Process Hallway®, a practical framework used by employers to navigate disability accommodation decisions with greater consistency, confidence, and competence. She is also the founder of the ADA Decision Lab, a live learning and coaching program where HR, labor relations, risk, and disability compliance professionals strengthen their decision-making through real cases, repetition, conversation, and practice.

A longtime friend and presenter to the PELRA community, Rachel is known for making complicated compliance obligations understandable, practical, and usable. Her work is grounded in a simple belief: knowing the law matters—but knowing what to do next is what allows professionals to serve employees and their organizations well.
