The world of work has changed forever, as employees and job seekers continue to reconsider where, how, and even why they want to work. At the same time, the public increasingly expects government to match the speed, accessibility, and responsiveness they experience elsewhere. A package ordered today can be tracked in real time and delivered tomorrow. A banking app can instantly confirm a transaction or flag a suspicious charge. A rideshare appears within minutes. 

Despite these demands, governments remain constrained by tight budgets, aging infrastructure, workforces stretched thin by retirements and turnover, and an inability to add positions. In other words, government is being asked to do more with less – and do it faster. While some view artificial intelligence as the solution, government will always need talented and committed people – an engaged workforce. 

In this session, we will examine the characteristics of the new world of work, the current state of employee engagement in government, and the root causes of disengagement. We will then showcase effective practices that government organizations are using to drive high levels of engagement, including actionable recommendations for building a more engaged, resilient public workforce that strengthens service delivery and community outcomes.
